Over 70% of Kenya’s population live in rural areas where majority of them depend on rivers and springs for domestic water use. However, these ecosystems face a couple of threats from unsustainable practices such as eucalyptus planting and conversion of riparian areas to agricultural land, thus contributing to water pollution.
GTI is engaging the local communities to restore rivers and streams by removing eucalyptus trees and replacing them with indigenous bamboo and native tree species at the catchments and along river banks while enhancing thousands of livelihoods through bamboo products, bee keeping, and agro forestry.
